Before starting to knit, get the stitches on the knitting needle. To start, take the Worsted Weight Yarn and measure out a length, and first of all start with a slip knot and it’s just a standard slip knot where the
thread is looped through and then the loop is pulled through and the slip knot slides back and forth. It’s like a child’s finger knitting. The slip knot slides onto the knitting needle and this is the first stitch.
This procedure takes both hands. You hold your knitting needle, which is your working needle with your one stitch in your right hand and with your left hand you have to take your yarn and form an L with your fingers and go between those two strands of yarn. With your remaining three fingers you want to grab the tail ends, so that your yarn looks like that in your hand.
Now, to get the stitches on to the knitting needle, you have to take the point of your needle and scoop up the bottom thread, bottom yarn on your thumb and then reach up and scoop the yarn on your index finger through that loop on your thumb. Release your thumb and snug up your stitch and that is your second stitch. Do it again. Take your knitting needle; Scoop up that bottom yarn on your thumb and now scoop the top thread on your index finger through the loop on your thumb, releasing your thumb and snugging up the yarn. Do that a few more times. It takes a while to get used to the cast on, but once you do, it can go very quickly.
The cast on edge is different on both sides. There is a smooth side or a public side. This would be the right side of your knitting project and then there is also the back side which is a little bit bumpy, doesn’t look quite as tidy as the public side. Once again you have your tail of your yarn and the yarn connected to your skin of yarn. You take your thumb and index finger and go in between the two yarns threads and spread them out and grab the remaining tail yarns with your remaining three fingers. Take your point of needle and scoop it into the bottom yarn on your thumb and then catch the yarn on your index finger and pull it through the loop. Release your thumb and snug up the stitch. You will do this procedure for as many stitches as you need for your knitting project.

Sock-knitting machines are used to make socks. You can also knit mittens, scarves using the sock-knitting machine. Sock knitting machines are antiques and they are not made any more. Sock
knitting machines are very old, approximately. 80 to 100 years old. Its history dates back to 1800 and 1900 this was used at home only. It is very easy to knit a sock, in the sock-knitting machine. It takes an hour to knit a sock. Different sizes of socks can be made in the sock-knitting machine. One can make ankle socks, knee socks, men’s and ladies, kid’s socks in the machine.
There are many easy to use -patterned sock yarns, sold in the market. These yarns can be used in the sock-knitting machine. Sport weight yarns are also used in the machine. Worsted weight yarns can be used also on the slot cylinders. This yarn does mock ribbing. Opal, Loma’s laces, Regia, Trekking XXL and Alpaca yarns, are also used in the sock-knitting machine. It is very easy to learn the process of making sock using the sock-knitting machine. There are annual conferences, where people learn by attending classes.
There are different patterns and ways to knit socks, using the machine. There is a cylinder with slots for the needles in the machine and the needles have latches. When the needle passes in the cam shell path, the knitting is made. The first step is to setup a basket or bonnet which makes the needles move continuously. After the setup of bonnet, scrap or waste yarn should be used. When knitting, the yarn ball winder should be used to keep the yarn at an even tension. The main purpose of using the waste yarn, is when the sock is finished the yarn can be clipped and ribbed out. Now the hem of the sock is made. The number of rows should be counted when the carrier goes around the cylinder, while knitting. Hem top should be knitted by taking a stitch from the first row, and should be hanged on the needle.
A ribber is put on the machine, after the hem and purl stitches are made. When the ribber is put, the stitches are transferred from cylinder needle to ribber needle. After this, the ankle part of sock is knitted. Half of the stitches are transferred, from ribber needle to cylinder needle. This will create knit stitches on the ankle. The start and stop points are marked red on the cylinder, for the heel and toes. The heel is knitted on the front of the machine, and the back half needles are not used here. Once the heel is made, the foot we begin the foot of the sock. After the foot is made, the toe is made. Now the stitches of the ribber, are transferred to the cylinder needle. Ribber stitches are made on the top of the foot, and knitting stitches of the machine are made on the bottom of the foot. Now on the top of the toe, is made with Kitchener stitch. The sock has been knitted fully, by the sock-knitting machine.

Want to learn how to knit or crochet - but find every time you cast on stitches you tend to be all fingers and thumbs. Well fret not because help for those wanting to learn how to knit or crochet is available.
Over 24 million people love crafting with yarn and believe it or not - some of that total is men, the male species love to knit or crochet just as much as women. Hobbies that involve knitting, sewing or the following of a pattern (dressmaking) can be very rewarding (financially). Being handy with a needle and cotton or knitting needles is a cost affective chore for the housewife on a budget as in i.e. knitting a cardigan, jumpers or woolly socks for the kids.
To learn how to knit or crochet is quite simple, some reasons why people love to knit a hat, gloves or crochet a baby shawl is because they find it satisfying and enjoy the relaxing effect it gives helping to relieve stress.
Once you learn how to knit or crochet you may find yourself inundated with orders for fair aisle sweaters or baby bonnets. Knitted garments make great gifts. This is a social activity where friendship still prevails while you learn. It is also a portable hobby - so where ever you go your knitting goes too. Once you have mastered the art people will take notice of your originality in design - which can lead to knitwear orders. Why so many people knit, dress-make and crochet is because of the pleasure gained working with yarn textures. Get to know your wool when you learn how to knit or crochet. There are five basic types of yarn: Baby fingering, sport baby worsted weight, chunky and bulky
Expect to find type differences; yarns have different thickness or “weights,” with fingering being the finest. Terms are used to differentiate knitting yarns, for example the term “ply,” refers to the number of strands that were twisted together to form the yarn. Yarn content or “fiber content” states what the yarn is made of: synthetic or natural fibers. Knowledge on craft materials will give better insight as to what is best suited for different projects. Synthetic yarns, like acrylics wash easily. Materials as such are worn by people whose skin is rather sensitive to wool.
Follow all instructions accordingly on yarn labels. Information may include - the sort of wool it is, the amount and/or yardage in the ball or skein, gauge and fibre content.
Check for freebies (patterns) on the label. Have practice knitting sessions before embarking on any project that may involve other than plain or pearl stitches. Go to a jumble sale and pick up unused balls of wool or un-ravel an old knitted jumper for your first attempt - this will save on the pennies. Seamstresses who professionally knit or crochet woolly blankets and patchwork quilts for the cold winter months - do so because of practice.
A crochet hook has a notch at one end for catching loops of yarn which draws them through stitches. Crochet hooks can be purchased in aluminum, plastic and wood (just like knitting needles). They are often recognized by a letter system for size marking. Sizes range between B (2.25 mm) to S (19 mm), the largest, and come in 6″ lengths.
Use steel crochet hooks for crochet dainties like lace and doilies. These differ i.e. sizing range, using numbers from 00 (3.5 mm), the largest, to 14 (.75 mm), the smallest. When you learn how to knit or crochet you will need to know about needle sizes, different textures and yarns. Depending on the garment you tend on knitting will decipher what knitting pins to use. Pins are sold in pairs and come in various sizes, from 0 (2 mm), the smallest, to size 15 (10 mm) and larger and also come in 10″ or 14″ lengths. Usually an indication of the knitting pin size is located on the end of the straight needle.
If the woollies you choose to knit are clothing items like Afghans, then these can be worked in a tube without a seam. Circular (round) knitting needles can be used. These are long flexible needles with points at both ends. For less complicated tasks that do not have seams (booties and mittens) “double-pointed knitting needles” are used. Sold in sets of four and as the name indicates, there is a point on each end. Once you learn how to knit - then the knitting pattern that once looked complicated to you begins to make sense - therefore resulting in casting on and casting off with your eyes closed.

Knitting
Of all the different types of needlework, knitting is one of the most popular. Knitting is a specific type of
needlework that is identified by the process of looped stitches pulled through one another. Knitting is commonly used to make clothing and accessories such as hats, scarves, sweaters and gloves, as well as blankets and afgans. Most commercially produced knitted items are made with knitting machines; their high speed is indispensable for meeting the demands of the world economy. Knitting machines have not done away with human knitting, however; far from it, knitting has gone through a recent resurgence in popularity as a craft and hobby. One of the great things about knitting is that you can make a wide variety of items with the same relatively simple steps. Just select a different type of yarn and a different variation in your stitch, and you can come up with a very different end product.
The origins of knitting
Archeologists have found evidence of knitting as far back as the first millennium. Obviously, knitting has been around for a long time. Indeed, even the ancient Egyptians are known to have knitted colorful socks and other accessories. It is generally thought that the first peoples to use knitting to make blankets and clothing were the ancient Arabians. The history of knitting was pretty straightforward until the invention of the knitting machine. The knitting machine completely changed the purpose of knitting. Before the industrialization of knitting, it was an essential task for many families, a means to keep warm and clothed. After the knitting machine, blankets and clothing were mass-produced far more cheaply than any one person making it. For this reason, knitting today is primarily a recreational pursuit. Knitters enjoy gathering together to socialize. People love to knit because it can be an extremely relaxing way to pass the time and ease one’s nerves. The products of their pastimes are often presented as gifts, which can save you some money as well. The demographics of knitting are changing as well. Knitting used to be the sole preserve of primarily older women. More and more, however, knitting is becoming popular with younger generations. Indeed, some studies show that knitting has risen in popularity among the 25 to 35 age group by as much as 150%.
Different types of knitting
The two main types of straight-needle knitting are weft knitting and warp knitting. Weft knitting requires only one string of yarn at time, but can be more susceptible to snags and runs. Warp knitting, on the other hand, is usually done by machine, so when most people think of knitting, they are usually thinking of weft knitting. Another important type of knitting that is commonly done by hand is circular knitting. This method uses a circular needle, and creates a “tube” of yarn when completed – great for socks and other tubular garments.
What materials do you need to start knitting?
Knitting is an ancient and rudimentary craft. As such, the materials that you need to knit are fairly basic; when it comes down to it, all you need to knit is some needles and some yarn. You should pay close attention to the type of yarn you use, however, as it will have a significant impact on how your final product looks and feels. For instance, certain yarns are appropriate for stretchy materials, while other yarns will produce less stretchy, more solid final results. The width and thickness of the yarn should be taken into account when selecting knitting needles to use. Picking out the yarn can be one of the more pleasant steps in making an item, as knitting yarn comes in a variety of colors and styles and it is always fun to play around with your imagination. Some are solid colors, others have multiple colors for striping, and others include sparkles and other embellishments.
Knitting resources
The best thing for those serious about knitting is to join a knitting circle. In a knitting circle, members will meet with their yarn and needles at the home of different members or local coffee shop and just knit, share tips, and socialize. If you are on your own, you can always turn to the Internet for a wealth of knitting resources. Groups, forums, and message boards provide a means of communication and getting together for knitters. Through these avenues, many knitting enthusiasts share tips, techniques, patterns, and tales of successful projects. The Internet is also a great place to order knitting materials and patterns, and can help novice knitters get past some of the challenges that face those new to the craft.
Craft and hobby stores will also carry a robust selection of knitting needles, yarns and patterns. Do not be afraid to ask employees in these stores for help – more often than not, you will be able to find experienced knitters who can offer you some sound advice and tips. Steve Dolan loves arts and crafts. As an artist fascinated by textile art, he has been knitting for years. See his favorite knit patterns at Knits and Knitting Patterns, and be sure to visit Knitting for more knitting fun!

Entrelac knitting is a very interesting type of knitting. In this type of knitting beautiful textured diamond patterns are created. The knitted fiber made with Entrelac knitting just looks like basket woven strips of
knitted fabric. In this pattern basically there are interlocked pieces are connected which have different orientations. This Entrelac knitting is really a fun and resulting fabric of just look very pretty.
Entrelac knitting can be done on both circular and flat. In circular Entrelac knitting is turned after full round of squares and next set is knitted in opposite direction. There are many other techniques are there for getting textured fabric but Entrelac knitting allows you have multicolored knitted fabric. And even Entrelac knitting is used to have multicolored patterns. You can have many different colors for single pattern but to keep it simple try to use minimum color because as number of colors increase complexity of this Entrelac knitting increases.
For making Entrelac pattern you only require knit stitch and purl stitch and you must have ability to knit or purl two stitches together. You can even use garter stitch or stokineete stitch.
First thing you have to knit first base triangle, cast on seven stitches then starting with purl stitch continue till 14 rows with stokineete stitches. Then for second block, use another color cast 7 stitches on another needle then repeat seven times for next row knit 7 stitches, after this row for next row 6 purl stitches and purl 7th stitch together with adjacent stitch of first block.
Then third block, across upper edge of first block pick up 7 stitches and then continue with yarn from second block, knit purl stitches for 1st row. And with stokineete stitch knit till next 14 rows.
For next block , use different colors again cast on 7 stitches repeat the 7 purl stitches and after that knit 6 stitches and after that 2 stitches together repeat this procedure for 7 times. Keep yarn as it is, don’t break it.
For 7th block pick seven loops along the left edge of block two onto left hand needle continue with yarn from fifth block and then knit stokineete stitch for total 15 blocks. And for last seventh block repeat the procedure of second block. And repeat this whole procedure for creating some specific patterns.
Amazing thing about Entrelac knitting is that row of knitting contain many small rows inside the blocks. If you wish to have square edges then Entrelac knitting is done with triangles. It is knitted same as squares but with decrease and increase of stitches.

Knitting machines are used to create knit fabrics and are also known as a knitting frame, hand knitting machine and knitting loom. Knitting machines can be operated by hand or by motor. Mechanical punch
cards, push buttons and computers are used to select the pattern stitches.
Lee invented the first knitting machine. There was a story behind his invention and a painting was displayed about Lee in the Stocking Framer’s Guildhall in London. Lee invented the machine because his girlfriend preferred knitting. Another story produced by Alfred Elmore is how Lee’s ideas are formed for the knitting machine, as he watched his wife knitting. His painting is popularly called ‘The Invention of the Stocking Loom’. Lee demonstrated the operation of the machine to Queen Elizabeth I, for a patent right, but the Queen refused it. Initially, the knitting machine had 8 needles to the inch and later it increased to 20 needles to the inch. Lee started knitting stockings from silk and wool. Lee changed his workplace to France, but unfortunately he did not flourish in the business. He died in Paris and his workers sold the machines in London.
Later John Ashton assistant of Lee improved the knitting machine and added the mechanism ‘divider’ to the machine. The business started developing by the spinners of Spitalfield village. The demand for stockings made of cotton rise. Knitting by machines was accepted, but it was too expensive for the knitters to buy. Knitters started to hire the machines and started knitting in the machine. In the year 1758, Jedediah Strutt, attached a device called the ‘Derby rib’. The trade moved towards Nottingham, and the workers were running short of raw materials. The spinners found great difficulty in using cotton whereas the Gloucester, spinners found easy to use cotton and they were competing with Nottingham spinners. Later Richard Arkwright, operated the machine by horsepower. Nottingham produced cotton stockings, Derby used silk and Leicester used wool.
There are two types of models known as industrial and domestic, to create rectangular and tubular fabric. There are two flat beds facing each other in the double bed machines. They are used to create purl and plain rib fabric. Single bed machines can also have rib attachment to produce same purl and plain ribs fabric. In the domestic model, 22 latch hook needles are used to hold the stitches. Across the bed of needle, a carriage or cam box is passed to create the next stitch. We can select a particular needle with the help of punch card to pass through the carriage. The machine knits ‘fair isle’ pattern and also the plating and knit weaving patterns.
Weft knitting method is used in domestic knitting machines and the fabric resembles the fabric knitted by hand. Knitting by domestic knitting machine is faster than in hand knitting. The texture of fabric knitted by machine is even the texture knitted by hand. Tuck stitches are easily made in machine knitting whereas the garter stitch is easier in hand knitting.
